Watch: Controversial Films

As many of you may know about the film called, ‘Arbat’, that recently has gain popularity cause by a ban occurs in Thailand. The film is in a theatre now after a few edits but before that it has been quite controversial.

There are so many films that become famous by all incidents that happen. Some movies become controversial cause by its story or some cause by what the film trying to express.

Today I’m going to talk about top 5 controversial movie in a recent years. This isn’t in a chronological order and has been put together into the list by me so basically these are films that I’m interested in.

1. The Da Vinci Code (2006)
9 years ago, a film based on Dan Brown’s best seller novel, staring Tom Hanks, had become a huge deal in most countries in the world including Thailand. The film is about a belief that Jesus Christ do have a child and that god does not exist, which can be called as ‘Godless.’ Many Catholic based countries outright banned the movie for its historical inaccuracy and vicious attack on the image of Jesus Christ. There were a lot of protests going on in the world during that time including Thailand. This is one of the mainstream film that get this kind of reaction from audiences which is very rare.

2. A Serbian Film (2010)
I have a chance to watch this film in fully uncut version earlier this morning, and 1 hour into this film I have to stop. The film tell a story about a aging porn actor who need to make money for his family and decided to take a one last job, which later he finds out that the film he agrees to be part of is a sick snuff films of pedophilia, necrophilia and torture and there is no way back to him and maybe it is too late to protect his family, which is incredibly disturbing. The full plot of a movie is nasty enough to make you want to throw up. If you want to know how f*cked up a film can be, please check this out. All I can tell you is there are scenes where a main character does rape a baby (a newborn). That should describe all about this movie and a more than enough reason why this movie has been banned in several countries around the globe.

3. Shakespeare Must Die (2012)
A film by a Thai director known as “Ink K”, the movie talks about a nobleman that crowded himself to be a king and use his power in a wrong way. Based on a production of William Shakespeare’s “Macbeth.” The Government of Thailand banned this film from being distributed there for fear of division and possibly inciting violent clashes between rival political groups in the country.

4. The Interview (2014)
The film depicts two journalists who are hired by the CIA to assassinate the North Korean leader, Kim Jong. Considering its premise, there’s no wonder North Korea has already determined to ban the film. Sony later decided to release this film online everywhere and become one of the most controversial movie in 2014. *Spoiler Alert* Kim Jong Un died at the end of this film and that’s probably why North Korea called Hollywood movies, “Act of War.” Imagine killing the president of United States on a film, will that movie receive a same treatment as this?

5. The Last Temptation of Christ (1988)
Whenever one goes to make a movie portraying one of the most religious figures known to man, it is obvious that Christians and others who see Jesus Christ as holy and pure would have difficulties being with this film. This film was banned in so many places around the globe such as Singapore and the Philippines and surprisingly in United States. But this is arguably one of the best films to tell a story about Jesus Christ. Definitely on the list of films you should watch once in your lifetime.

So what do you think about the list? Do you agree that these films should be banned because of various reasons? In my opinion a movie, is and will always be a movie. It’s a fictional and it’s not real. If banning them will prevent a social to be worse, then you are just trying to avoid the truth and continue fooling people. Let the movie be free and stop censoring our freedom of speech. Films are the best way to express an opinion to wide range of people and in a very effective way. You cannot and should not interrupt that. I will stand by a freedom of creating an art and telling a story.
